How to say “What time is it?” in Vietnamese

Mấy giờ rồi?

Bây giờ là mấy giờ?

There are two ways to answer:

The time + rồi

Bây giờ là + the time

• Mấy giờ means “what time?”
• Bây giờ means “now, at the moment”
• Là means tobe (is, are, am…)
• Rồi means “already”
• 1 giờ: 1 o’clock
• 3 giờ: 3 o’clock

Ví dụ (eg):

🔷 Huy (30) and Thảo (25)

Huy: Mấy giờ rồi em? (what time is it em?)

Thảo: 4 giờ rồi anh. (It’s 4 anh.)

🔷 Lan (9) and her teacher Thủy (27)

Lan: Bây giờ là mấy giờ cô?

Thủy: 8 giờ rồi con.

Note: In spoken Vietnamese, remember to add the pronoun of the listener in the end of the question or sentence. That makes you friendlier, more polite and nicer. And maybe the locals will see you as a “real” Vietnamese, not foreigners.

How to say “am” and “pm” in Vietnamese

“am” and “pm” in Vietnamese based on if the time is in the morning, at noon, in the afternoon or in the evening.

• From 12 am to 10 am: sáng (means morning) 
• From 11 am to 12 pm: trưa (means noon) 
• From 1 pm to 6 pm: chiều (means afternoon) 
• From 7 pm to 10 pm: tối (means evening) 
• From 11pm to 12 am: đêm (means night) 

Ví dụ (eg):

• 1 am : 1 giờ sáng
• 11 am: 11 giờ trưa
• 5 pm: 5 giờ chiều
• 10 pm: 10 giờ tối
• 12 am: 12 giờ đêm

How to say 7:00, 8:00…

• 7:00 = 7 giờ = bảy giờ 
• 10:00 = 10 giờ = mười giờ

How to say 7:15, 8:20…

• 7:15 = 7 giờ 15 = bảy giờ mười lăm
• 8:20 = 8 giờ 20 = tám giờ hai mươi
• 17:25 = 5:25 pm = 5 giờ 25 = năm giờ hai lăm

How to say 7:30, 8:30…

• 7:30 = 7 giờ 30 or 7 giờ rưỡi  = bảy giờ ba mươi = bảy giờ rưỡi

Rưỡi means a half and often used.

• 2:30 pm = 2 giờ rưỡi chiều
• 9:30 pm = 9 giờ rưỡi tối
• 4:30 pm = 4 giờ rưỡi chiều

How to say 7:40, 8:45…

There are 2 ways to say them. 

7:40 

• 7 giờ 40 = bảy giờ bốn mươi
• 8 giờ kém 20 = tám giờ kém hai mươi. (20 minutes to 8)
• Kém means “lack, inadequate“

8:45

• 8 giờ 45 = tám giờ bốn lăm
• 9 giờ kém 15 = chín giờ kém mười lăm (15 minutes to 9).

13:50

• 1 giờ 50: một giờ năm mươi
• 2 giờ kém 10 = hai giờ kém mười (10 minutes to 2).

11:55

• 11 giờ 55: mười một giờ năm lăm
• 12 giờ kém 5: mười hai giờ kém năm (5 minutes to 12).

Ví dụ: Linh (28), John (60)

John: Ở bên Việt Nam, bây giờ là mấy giờ con? (what time is it in Vietnam?)

Linh: Dạ bên Việt Nam bây giờ là 8 giờ sáng. Còn bên Mỹ thì sao chú? (It’s 8 am in Vietnam. How about in the US?)

John: Bên Mỹ bây giờ là 8 giờ tối con. (It’s 8 pm in the US.)

• (ở) bên Mỹ: in the US
• (ở) bên Việt Nam: in Vietnam
• còn … thì sao? How about…? What about…?
• Dạ …: a polite particle in Southern Vietnamese, especially when you talk to the person who is older than you. Dạ is put at the beginning of the sentences.

• ba giờ kém năm rồi = hai giờ năm lăm rồi (2:55)
