WHY YOU SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON LEARNING PRONUNCIATION FIRST
Vietnamese is a tonal language and there are many sounds don’t exist in English pronunciation. Therefore, good pronunciation will help you to understand others and to be understood by others.
In 6-year Vietnamese teaching journey, I have met many students at the elementary, intermediate and even advanced levels that really good at reading and listening. However, it’s really hard for them to be understood by others. Because they have made a lot of mistakes with pronunciation, which makes them feel discouraged in communicating with native speakers. And it’s really hard for them to change their pronunciation habits after a long period of time speaking like that. Therefore, good pronunciation is really important when you start learning Vietnamese.
⛔ Please note that at the beginning of learning Vietnamese, just pick only one of the accent to follow, Northern or Souther accent. And later when you are at the intermediate or advanced level, you can practice listening both Northern and Southern accent. But first, just one of them. That will help you not to be confused.
