In this lesson, we will learn top 30 common Vietnamese verbs that beginners should know. You can apply these verbs to daily conversations immediately. The verbs are with example sentence and grammar explainations. Let’s begin.
1. ĂN: to eat
Cuối tuần chị hay ăn bánh xèo. (At weekend I usually eat bánh xèo.)
- hay: usually, often
- cuối tuần: at weekend
- bánh xèo: Vietnamese pancake

2. UỐNG: to drink
Bạn em ngày nào cũng uống 2 ly cà phê 🥃 (My friend drinks 2 cups of coffee everyday.)
- ngày nào cũng + verb/adj: do something everyday
- ly: cup, glass
3. Đi: to go
Hôm nay ảnh đi siêu thị với vợ (Today he goes to the supermarket with his wife)
- hôm nay: today
- siêu thị: supermarket
- vợ: wife # chồng: husband
4. THÍCH: to like
Mình thích ăn đồ ăn Việt Nam như bún bò, gỏi cuốn… (I like Vietnamese food such as bún bò, gỏi cuốn…)
Em thích uống cà phê sữa lắm. (I love to drink coffee with milk = like … a lot.)
- đồ ăn: food
- như: like, such as
- …+ lắm: really, very, so. Ví dụ: lạnh lắm (very cold); đẹp lắm (so beautiful)
- cà phê sữa: coffee with milk
5. MUỐN: to want
Ba mẹ chỉ muốn chỉ lập gia đình sớm. (Her parents want her to get married soon.
- lập gia đình = có gia đình: get married
- sớm: soon, early
6. LÀM VIỆC: to work
The short version is làm.
Chú đó làm việc ở công ty ABC 2 năm rồi. (He has been working for company ABC for 2 years.)
- công ty: company
- duration + rồi: for a time (the action have happed in the past and still continuing. Ví dụ: Em học tiếng Việt 2 tháng rồi (I have been learning Vietnamese for 6 months)
7. CÓ: to have, to own, there is/are
- Chỉ có con rồi. (She have kids)
- Nhà em có 2 con chó với 1 con mèo. (There are 2 dogs and 1 cats in my family)

8. NÓI: to say, to speak
Anh nói được tiếng Việt chút xíu. (I can speak a little bit Vietnamese.)
Anh không hiểu chỉ đang nói gì. (I don’t understand what she is saying.)
- verb + được: can do something
- chút xíu: a bit, a little
- đang + verb/adj: be + V-ing (the action is happening at the moment)
9. NGHE: to listen, to hear
- Em hay nghe nhạc tiếng Anh. (I often listen to English music.)
- Em có nghe anh nói không? (Can you hear me?)
10. BIẾT: to know
- Chị không biết cái này tiếng Việt nói sao (I don’t know how to say this in Vietnamese.)
- Chị biết rồi. (I knew it)
11. GẶP: to meet, to see
Rất (là) vui được gặp chị. (Nice to meet/see you)
Mình chưa gặp chị Thủy. (I haven’t met Ms. Thủy)
- rất: very, really. And “rất là” is often used in spoken Vietnamese
- chưa + verb: haven’t done something yet, didn’t do something before
12. TỚI/ ĐẾN: to come, to arrive
- Cô tới đây để gặp chú Trí. (I come here to meet Mr. Trí)
- Ảnh tới chưa? (Have he came yet?)
13. THẤY: to feel, to see, to think (in my opinion)
Hôm qua em thấy chỉ ở chợ Bến Thành. (Yesterday I saw her at Bến Thành Market)
Em thấy cái màu trắng đẹp hơn cái màu đen. (I think the white one is more beatiful than the black one.)
Em thấy mệt quá! (I feel so tired!)
- adj/verb + hơn: more…Eg. tốt hơn (better)
- adj/verb + quá! so, too… Ví dụ: nóng quá! (too hot), ngon quá (so tasty/delicious)
14. LÀM: to do, to work, to make
- Bây giờ em đang làm gì? (What are you doing now?)
- Chồng chỉ làm bác sĩ. (Her husband works as a doctor.) (As the verb No.6 mentioned above.)
- Anh không muốn làm ba mẹ buồn. (I don’t want to make my parents sad.)
- Làm pizza dễ lắm. (Making pizza is very easy.)
15. ĐI DU LỊCH: to go travelling
Vợ chồng ảnh đi du lịch khắp Việt Nam rồi. (She and her husband have travelled all over Vietnam) (or He and his wife…)
Em muốn đi du lịch Hàn Quốc. (I want to go travel to Korea.)
- khắp + place: all over …
- vợ chồng + somebody = She and her husband or He and his wife. (This is a common way to address a married couple.)
16. NGHĨ: to think
- Anh nghĩ bệnh viện này rất là tốt. (I think this hospital is very good).
- Em không biết chỉ đang nghĩ gì. (I don’t know what she is thinking.)
17. SỐNG: to live
- Hiện tại mình đang sống ở quận Bình Thạnh. (Currently I am living in Binh Thanh District, HCMC.)
- Sài Gòn là một nơi đáng sống. (Saigon is a place that worth to live.)
18. VỀ: to return, to come back, to be back
Tháng sau anh John sẽ về nước (John will be back to his country next month).
Em về nhà lúc 8 giờ tối. (I got home at 8 pm.)
19. CHƠI: to play
=> đi chơi: hang out (Literally “go play”)
- Họ hay đi chơi ở công viên này. (They often hang out in this park.)
- Buổi tối ảnh với bạn gái hay chơi game. (He and his girlfriend usually play game in the evening.)
20. COI/XEM: to watch, keep eyes/attention to sb/st
Trẻ con không nên coi ti vi nhiều. (Chilren shouldn’t watch TV much.)
Vợ chồng chị tuần nào cũng đi coi phim. (We go to the movie theater every week.)
Thứ bảy anh bận coi con. (On Friday I’ll be busy to take care of my children.)
- nên + verb: should # không nên: shouldn’t…
- tuần nào cũng + verb: do something every week.
21. NHÌN: to look => nhìn thấy/thấy: to see
Đừng có nhìn chỉ, chỉ hay ngại. (Don’t look at her, she often be shy.)
Hôm qua em nhìn thấy/thấy họ đang đi chơi với nhau. (I saw they hang out together.)
- Đừng/ Đừng có + verb: Don’t do something
- Ngại: be shy
22. MUA: to buy, to purchase
Em không biết mua bia Heineken ở đâu. (I don’t know where to buy Heineken beer.)
23. BÁN: to sell
Chị ơi, ở đây có bán khẩu trang không? (Do you sell face mask here?)
- Pronoun + ơi: To get the seller’s attention and to be more polite. Eg: em ơi, cô ơi, anh ơi,…

24. GIÚP: to help, to assist
Ảnh giúp em rất nhiều. Em biết ơn ảnh lắm. (He helps me a lot. I feel so grateful to him.)
- biết ơn: grateful (Literally is “know favor”)
25. CẦN: to need
- Cô cần con giúp gì không? (Do you need my help?)
- Chú cần mua 1 chiếc xe máy. (I need to buy a motorbike.)
26. DÙNG: to use, to take food/drink
Chú thích dùng điện thoại Iphone. (I like to use Iphone phone.)
Anh chị dùng gì ạ? (What do you want to take?) (often asked by waiter/waitress)
- điện thoại: phone, cell phone
- ….ạ: the polite particle, put in the end of the sentence.
27. GỌI: to call, to order
Anh gọi cho em không được. (I can’t call you)
Gọi taxi giúp em nha. (Please help me to call taxi).
- verb + không được: can’t do something
- giúp + sb: help somebody
- …nha: suggestion particle (in a informal way), put in the end of the sentence.
28. CHO: to give, to let
Ảnh cho em 3 cái áo thun. (He gave me 3 T-shirts.)
Nhớ cho mình biết nha. (Remember to let me know.)
- cái: classifier for things, objects
- nhớ + verb + nha: remember to …. (often used in spoken Vienamese)
29. HỎI: to ask
Chị nên hỏi ý kiến của ba mẹ trước. (You should ask your parents’ opinion first.)
Con lúc nào cũng hỏi tại sao. (You always ask why.)
Cho em hỏi nhà vệ sinh ở đâu? (Can I ask where the toilet is?)
- nên + verb: should…
- lúc nào cũng + verb/adj: always…
30. ĐƯA: to give (sb st), to take (sb go somewhere)
Hôm qua con đưa cho cô cái đó rồi. (Yesterday I gave that one to you.)
Tối nay anh đưa em đi Quận 7 chơi. (Tonight I will take you to hang out at District 7.)
- đưa + something + cho sb = đưa + cho sb + st: give something to somebody. Eg: đưa cái này cho em (give it to me)
- đưa + somebody + đi + place: take somebody go somewhere. Eg: đưa mẹ đi chợ (take mom to the market)
- đi + place + chơi: hang out in/at …
