We will learn 8 Wh-question words (What? Who? Whose? Where? When? Why? When? Which?) with examples and detailed explaination in this lesson. Let’s begin.
CONTENTS
1.What? = gì? = cái gì?
Ví dụ 1: (eg 1)
A: Anh thích uống cái gì vậy?
What do you like to drink?
B: Anh thích uống cà phê đen không đường.
I like to drink black coffee without sugar.
Ví dụ 2: (eg 2)
A: Lát nữa mẹ định đi siêu thị, con muốn mua gì?
Later I’m going to the supermarket, what do you want to buy?
B: Dạ con muốn mua xoài với thanh long.
I want to buy mangos and dragon fruits
- …vậy? : a question particle, often used in the end of the question. “vậy” will make your questions more natural. It is ussually pronounced as /dậy/, /dị/, /dợ/ in Southern Vietnamese.
- Lát nữa: later, a moment later
- định + verb: be going to do something, plan to do something
There are many personal pronouns used in example sentences. You can change them to suitable pronouns for you and for the listener.

2. Who? = Ai?
A: Ảnh là ai vậy? Có phải là chồng chị không?
Who’s he? He is your husband, isn’t it?
B: Đúng rồi em, ảnh là chồng chị đó.
That’s right, he’s my husband.
➡ với ai? = with Whom? (literally means “with-who”)
A: Chị hay đi du lịch với ai vậy?
Who do you often go travelling with?
B: Chị hay đi du lịch với bạn bè chị.
I often go travelling with my friends.
- Có phải…không? = …, phải không? = …, đúng không?: isn’t? is it right?
- Đúng rồi!: That’s right
3. Whose? = của ai?
“Của ai?” literally means “belong to-who”
Ví dụ 1:
A: Cái điện thoại này là của ai vậy anh?
Whose is this cellphone?
B: Hình như là của chị Thủy.
Seems like it’s belong to Ms.Thủy.
Ví dụ 2:
A: Xe này (là) của ai vậy em?
Whose is this bike?
B: Dạ xe này của chú Kim.
It’s Mr. Kim’s bike.
- Hình như là…: Seems like…, looks like…
Note: In spoken Vietnamese, remember to add the pronoun of the listener in the end of the question or sentence. That makes you friendlier, more polite and nicer. And maybe the locals will see you as a “real” Vietnamese, not foreigners. 
4. Where? = đâu? = ở đâu?
Ví dụ 1:
A: Nhà chị ở đâu vậy? Em nhớ ở gần đây, đúng không chị?
Where’s your house? I remember it’s nearby, isn’t it?
B: Ờ em, nhà chị ở gần đây, chạy xe 5 phút thôi.
Yes, it’s near here, just 5 minutes by motorbike.
Ví dụ 2:
A: Ba đi đâu vậy mẹ?
Mom, where does dad go?
B: Ba đi gặp chú Huy đó.
He goes to see Mr. Huy.

5. Why? = Tại sao…? = Sao…?
➡ Vì/ Bởi vì… nên…(Because…so…)
Ví dụ 1:
A: Sao chú học tiếng Việt vậy chú?
Why do you learn Vietnamese?
B: Bởi vì vợ chú là người Việt nên chú muốn nói tiếng Việt với gia đình bên vợ.
Because my wife is Vietnamese so I want to talk to her family in Vietnamese.
Ví dụ 2:
A: Tại sao em không nói cho chị biết?
Why don’t you let me know?
B: Dạ em sợ làm chị buồn.
I am afraid of making you sad.
6. How? = …như thế nào? = …sao?
Ví dụ 1:
A: Món này nấu như thế nào/sao vậy?
How to cook this food?
B: Dễ lắm, em coi video này đi.
So easy, let’s watch this video.
Ví dụ 2:
A: Dạo này em sao rồi?
How have you been lately?
B: Dạ em vẫn khỏe, còn anh thì sao?
I am still good, how about you?
7. When? = Khi nào?
“Khi nào…?” is at the beginning of the question, it means that you are asking something will happen in the future. It’s like “when will…?”
“…khi nào?” is in the end of the quesion, it means that you are asking something happed in the past. It’s like “when did…?”
Please remember the rule “END THE PAST, BEGIN THE FUTURE”, that may help you to use “khi nào” correctly.
Ví dụ 1:
A: Theo em, khi nào hết dịch covid?
In your opinion, when will the covid pandemic end?
B: Em nghĩ là lâu lắm, chắc năm 2023.
I think it will be a long time, maybe 2023
Ví dụ 2:
A: Anh Thomas về nước khi nào vậy chị? Em không biết gì hết.
When did Thomas go back to his country? I didn’t know it at all.
B: Ảnh về tuần trước đó. Chị tưởng là em biết.
He went last week. I thought you knew it.
- Theo + somebody… = Sb nghĩ là… = Theo Sb, sb nghĩ là… = in my opinion, i think
- Somebody + tưởng (là) …: I thought…
8. Which? = Noun + nào?
Ví dụ 1:
A: Em thích cái nào? Cái màu đen hay màu trắng?
Which one do you like? The black one or the white one?
B: Dạ em thích cả hai.
I like both.
Ví dụ 2:
A: Con học trường nào vậy?
Which school do you study?
B: Dạ con học trường Đại Học Kinh Tế.
I study in the University of Economy.
